“Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” – Victor Hugo

Victor Hugo is sometimes identified as the greatest French poet. Outside of France, his best-known works are the novels Les Misérables and Notre-Dame de Paris (known in English also as The Hunchback of Notre Dame).

He was wise when he stated his above quote.

To me, songwriting is mainly word-concept driven. (Enhanced by the music, arrangement and production of course.)

Instrumental music is emotional: beyond words, beyond literary meaning. The listener will “assign” whatever images, concepts and emotions he or she will while listening. In addition to what the composer wants to express, that’s the idea. Right?

Though I’m currently focusing on lyric-driven songs (sometimes you have to say it in words!), I’ve written more instrumental music then songs and am coming from that universe quite strongly. And that’s why this quote appealed to me.

It’s just so true!!
