Pablo Casals

Pablo Casals

Pablo Casals, at 95 years old, was answering questions one day. One of them went like this.

“Mr Casals, you’re the greatest cellist of the 20th Century, perhaps of all-time, and your career has been nothing short of spectacular. Why, at the age of 95, do you still practice 6 hours a day?

Casals answered, “Because I think I’m making progress.”

Pau Casals i Defilló (December 29, 1876 – October 22, 1973), known during his professional career as Pablo Casals was a Spanish cellist and conductor. He made many recordings throughout his career, of solo, chamber, and orchestral music, also as conductor, but Casals is perhaps best remembered for the recording of the Bach Cello Suites he made from 1936 to 1939.

Casals was an ardent supporter of the Spanish Republican government. After its defeat in 1939, Casals vowed not to return to Spain until democracy had been restored, although he did not live to see the end of the Franco dictatorial regime.

Thank you Dwight for emailing this quote to me a few years back.

Singer Auditions in LA. Great Opportunity!

This is an email-copy from a singer and vocal coach friend of mine, Lis Lewis:

Hello dear singers,

I just finished three weeks of getting Rihanna warmed up and ready for her big – and I mean big – tour starting April 16 in Antwerp, Belgium. She’s sounding great. And now it’s your turn. I’ve got two bits of news for you, both about auditions.

Idol Prep

If this year is anything like the last nine years, American Idol will be holding auditions this summer for next year’s Season Ten. Once the current show wraps, they will put a list of dates and cities on their website, www.americanidol.com/. Now is the time to prepare yourself and your 30 second a capela audition.

In collaboration once again with the good people at The Songwriting School of Los Angeles, http://www.TheSongWritingSchool.com, I will be holding a one day workshop called “Idol Prep” on Sunday, May 16, 2:00-5:00 PM. Twenty-five people will get a chance to sing their audition song for me, get a critique and then sing it again. Nerve-wracking, yes; a great learning experience, yes. And, of course, an excellent way to warm up for the real auditions. Here is a link to a full description of the class. http://tinyurl.com/y4a4y7k

For those of you who aren’t ready to audition but want to learn by watching, there are special auditor prices both in-person and online. Performers pay $75; auditors pay $25. In addition the School is giving a healthy discount on it’s excellent songwriting class, The Roots, for those who register. Call them at 818.848.7664 or go online to register.

To audit in person: http://tinyurl.com/y58cqut

To audit online, live: http://tinyurl.com/y4wpasb

Hitmakers Audition

There is a new reality show called ”Hitmakers“ looking for talented solo artists who write their own material – for the audition you must perform one of your songs and accompany yourself. Here is part of their description:

Bravo and True Entertainment, have partnered with The Writing Camp, America’s top songwriting team behind such hits as Beyonce’s “Halo” and Rihanna’s “SOS”, to discover hitmakers in every genre of music.

If you want to audition, you must fill out the online form, http://www.hitmakerscasting.com/. It’s a nationwide search but if you’re in Los Angeles they are having an open call on Sunday, April 25, 9AM-6PM at Musician’s Institute, 6752 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA 90028. You still have to fill out the form to apply. Go get ‘em, folks.

Happy Auditioning!
