“I took intermediate guitar lessons over the phone with Marty for approximately two years. One of the reasons I decided to take phone lessons was the amount of money I would be saving on gas. (Marty is in California and I am in NJ) On a serious note, Marty knows his business! His ability to know what I was doing on my end of the phone, blew me away. His ear for pitch was incredible. I could sing or play notes on the guitar and he immediately knew when I was playing the wrong note or when I was off key. Every once in a while, I would send him a video of my playing the guitar and he would expertly critique my form. His keen wit and outstanding teaching ability are the reasons everything he has taught me has stayed with me for many years and I would highly recommend Marty’s phone lessons to any serious musician.” Ken from NJ

Hello!

If you are having trouble finding a local teacher that works for you, please read this page. I wrote it for you.

In addition to my in-person students, I have taught music lessons successfully over the telephone for more than 1,000 hours over the span of the last twenty years. With modern technology I am now teaching using “Skype” as well.

Regarding lessons over the phone: I don’t need to see you in order to hear what you are playing. Music deals with sound, so that’s all I really need in order to get you to play how you want to play. I can tell if you are playing the right/wrong notes, if the rhythm is good/bad, if technique is stiff/relaxed, if you are in or out of tune, if you understand what you are doing or if you are happy with the lessons or not.

Technique studies need occasional videos, but everything else is as efficient on the phone as it is in person. Really. And with Skype, everything is covered.

I’ll give you a free 1/2 hour lesson so you can experience it for yourself.

When lessons aren’t going well with a certain teacher, these are common reasons why:

  1. Individual goals aren’t being fully addressed.
  2. The sequence of things to practice and learn are out of order: things are either too hard or too easy.
  3. The bottom-line essentials to playing an instrument, for pleasure or professionally, are missed– leaving gaping holes in your ability and understanding.
  4. The needed ear-training and rhythm skills that make music fun to play are neglected. These aren’t always needed, but much of time are. When your “ears” and rhythm aren’t up to par the music can feel robotic and mechanical, rather than fun, uplifting and often exhilarating.
  5. There is more, but that’s the idea.

All you need is a head set, a good long-distance calling plan and a good practice space.

Lessons are usually at the same time every week for an hour.

The basic flow of lessons are like this:

  1. We do a free 1/2 hour lesson. If you don’t like it we end off and say good bye. If you like it, you send a check in the mail for an introductory package of five lessons at $50 each. At the end of those five lessons if you become a regular student, lessons are my regular price. (See my rates and policy section.) Phone students pay for a block of eight lessons at a time as that saves time and energy with sending and receiving money. (I accept PayPal and credit cards, though there is not a “package” discount when using these.)
  2. By this time we’ve set up a regular schedule.
  3. At the designated time you call me and we have the lesson. I write down what I give you and you write down what you are suppose to practice. I provide pdf materials as needed.
  4. We finish the lesson and schedule for the following week.
  5. During the week you can call or email me with any questions that you have.
  6. We continue until you have achieved your personal goals and are playing the way you want to play.

If this sounds interesting to you, contact me and let’s set up a free 1/2 lesson!
And feel free to contact me with any questions you have, or just call me at (818) 242-7551.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you!
