Favorite Music Quote #6

Beethoven

“To play without passion is inexcusable!”

Beethoven

The next time you see a live performance, see which performer moves you the most. After you notice this, try and analyze WHY. Was it the notes? The expression? The looks of a singer?

When listening to instrumental music, notice which player gets the biggest applause. This is an interesting exercise in perception. Sometimes a really flashy solo with lot’s of notes will grab you: technical expertise. More often than not, an emotion-packed solo will grab you because it’s filled with passion.

Gotta love music!

“Don’t judge the picture by the frame, every man is not the same.”

Elton John

To fully take advantage of this quote, we should define the “picture,” the “frame” and the “man.”

“Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.” – Victor Hugo

250px-Victor_Hugo

Victor Hugo is sometimes identified as the greatest French poet. Outside of France, his best-known works are the novels Les Misérables and Notre-Dame de Paris (known in English also as The Hunchback of Notre Dame).

He was wise when he stated his above quote.

To me, songwriting is mainly word-concept driven. (Enhanced by the music, arrangement and production of course.)

Instrumental music is emotional: beyond words, beyond literary meaning. The listener will “assign” whatever images, concepts and emotions he or she will while listening. In addition to what the composer wants to express, that’s the idea. Right?

Though I’m currently focusing on lyric-driven songs (sometimes you have to say it in words!), I’ve written more instrumental music then songs and am coming from that universe quite strongly. And that’s why this quote appealed to me.

It’s just so true!!

What music moves you the most?
