The Band Doctor

What is the Band Doctor?

The Band Doctor is a performance consultant: I tighten up bands. Combine certain technical functions of a producer, an arranger, a session player and a band leader, and you have the Band Doctor.

In addition to any organizational help I provide, I largely focus on rhythm. These are common areas needing work: grooves, breaks, aligned spaces, sectional transitions, song flow and the flow of a set. There is actually quite a bit involved in creating a professional, tight band.

Unless asked for my opinion, I leave the material alone and tighten up the performance.

Qualifications

  • 35 year veteran professional musician.
  • Over 30,000 hours of one-on-one instruction and career consultations.
  • Experienced bandleader, conductor, rehearsal director, music director and organizer.
  • Over 600 hours spent tightening up bands and teaching professional group-playing skills and rehearsal techniques to musicians.

How does it work?

After gathering information about you, your scene and your goals, I create a personalized program that takes you to your next step. My goal is to help you with whatever it is you need help with, and to find and remove any barriers that could slow you down or prevent success.

We generally start with email and a phone conversation. If it looks like this service is a fit, we set a time to start working. With one person, we work on the phone or get together and take it from there. With a band, we set a time, I get together with the band, and off we go. We’ll discuss whatever is needed, then I listen to the band, take notes, and write a program. It’s very straight ahead and to the point.

How long will it take?

Depending on where you are and where you want to be, I could work with you anywhere from a few hours to twenty hours, or longer. We can have regular meetings to make sure you stay on track, or have longer programs where we get together when you need to. It all depends on how quickly you want to reach your next step and how much work you need.
